Interestingly, there has been a recent shift in the knowledge, expertise and funding for brain trauma research, as a result of America’s experiences is worn-torn countries. As more soldiers come home from Iraq and Afghanistan, military physicians, who were initially looking to the civilian medical community to guide their treatment of brain injuries, are now becoming the leaders in the filed.
As Dr. Jamshid Ghajar, the director of the Brain Trauma Foundation and a Cornell University neurosurgeon points out, “The Pentagon's money, experience and team approach have turned the tables, making the military the leader in the field.”
This means that that Brain Trauma Foundation, with Chairman Alan Quasha, and other similar organizations, will be collaborating more with military physicians. The nation’s military branches and veteran agencies have been heavily investing in brain injury research and its after effects out of necessity. As all physicians in the area point out, the more research there is, the better off brain injury patients will be – no matter where the research and funding come from.
